Ficep UK launches new Gemini Laser for thick-plate fabrication for structural steel
Ficep UK has launched its most advanced gantry CNC system to date, the Gemini Laser. A first-of-its-kind system, the Gemini Laser combines high-powered fibre laser cutting and precision machining in a single automated platform, offering a game-changing solution for structural steel fabricators and civil engineering contractors.
For businesses working with large-format and heavy plates, particularly in infrastructure and complex steelwork projects, the Gemini Laser streamlines production by reducing material handling, accelerating cycle times and eliminating secondary operations. Its ability to integrate thermal and mechanical processing makes it ideal for fabricators delivering bridges, large-span structures and energy sector components where speed, accuracy and versatility are critical.
Building on the success of Ficep’s original Gemini system, the laser model offers fibre laser sources powered up to 30 kW, with higher outputs available for specific applications. It can process mild and stainless steel plates up to 60 mm thick and eliminates the need for multiple machines, enabling a more compact and efficient workshop layout.
Its heavy-duty cutting gantry guides the laser head to ensure precise cutting performance, while an optional 45-degree bevel head allows for internal bevelled holes as well as for V, Y, X and K weld preparations directly on plate edges. The machine’s 7,000 RPM spindle with automatic tool changers supports drilling, tapping, countersinking and milling operations requiring tight tolerances.
The Gemini Laser’s robust gantry design and precision-ground helical racks minimise deflection during heavy machining tasks. Plate-referencing is picked up by the laser and automatically rotated by the nesting programs. Integrated clamps secure plate handling during processing, and its optional robotic unloading system reinforces its Industry 4.0 credentials.
Chris Berriman, Ficep UK sales director, says: “The Gemini Laser redefines what is possible in plate processing. By integrating high-power cutting and multi-process machining within a single system, it’s a game-changer for UK fabricators working on bridges, stadiums, offshore structures and other large-scale civil engineering projects. This combination of thermal and mechanical processing delivers exceptional efficiency, accuracy and flexibility.”
The Gemini Laser is supported by Ficep UK’s technical team, providing expert installation, training and after-sales service across the UK.
